First Year Student Guide

If you are just starting at Nashville State, you may be required to take NSCC 1010 First year Experience. The online textbook for that class is available to any student, was written by Nashville State faculty and staff and Chapter 1 has helpful tips for the first week of classes.

Do you know your schedule & course modes?

Nashville State has 7-week courses. Check your course start and end dates in your schedule. Does your course start at the beginning or midway through the semester? Does your course end midway through the semester or at the end of the semester? A seven week course covers the same material as 14-week course and for the same number of credits, it's just the speed at which that material is covered increases.

Nashville State has on-campus (face-to-face), online, virtual, and hybrid (some combination of two) course delivery modes. Do you know the delivery mode for each of your classes? See this video (2:56) for a brief description of the course modes and where to find those in your course schedule.

  • If your course is face-to-face, make sure you selected a campus you can get to. Campus maps can be found here.
  • Virtual courses require Zoom. The Zoom link for your class will be in the syllabus and usually on the main page of D2L/NS Online for your course. You can see these the first day of classes. Try our Zoom Tutorial if you are new to Zoom. Practice and prepare by using the free Zoom app.

Do you have your required course materials?

Some required course materials are present in D2L/NS Online the first day of classes, but not all. See this video (4:13) on how to find and obtain (if you need to) the required course materials.
