Ethical Concerns

While AI does present opportunities for advancement, there are ethical concerns that must be considered when utilizing these technologies. These concerns include impacts on human rights, the environment, and more. The list below features some of the main concerns but is not exhaustive and new concerns emerge as the technologies continue to evolve.

  • Bias and discrimination
    • As biases and discrimination are present in human environments which train AI models, similar biases and forms of discrimination have made their way into AI technologies. Historical overrepresentation and underrepresentation of certain populations also plays a role in AI and its outputs. The articles and studies below examine these biases and forms of discrimination with which AI continues to struggle.
  • Environmental impacts
  • Privacy and security
    • The efficacy of AI depends on a vast amount of training data. The data collected to train AI can include personal information which raises concerns about both privacy and security in the digital age. More information about these concerns can be found in the articles and studies below.
