Developing a Research Question

Before you start your research make sure you have a narrow, focused research question. A good research question will meet the criteria outlined in the box below.

What Makes a Good Research Question?

Avoid taking a position before starting your research!

Research Question Checklist

A good research question:

checkmark has an underlying problem of some significance (i.e., Do other people care about it?)

checkmark takes on a neutral tone and avoids loaded language.

check mark can be answered with authoritative evidence. Other people have already researched the topic.

check mark is not too narrow or too broad.
